Description

Join us for a memorable evening discovering the fine and interesting wines that are beginning to emerge from Bulgaria

Winemaking in the ancient region of Thrace dates back around 6,000 years. Incorporating parts of modern-day Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey and with centuries of turbulent history, winemaking was always an integral part of these communities, albeit with many disruptions of war and pestilence, not least of Roman invasion, Ottoman rule, phylloxera and the communist era.

Since independence it has often been a struggle to modernise and find an identity and direction for Bulgaria’s wine future. However, since joining the EU and with the help of both money and technical assistance, Bulgarian winemaking is starting to emerge to produce fine and interesting wine under the PDI’s of The Tracian Lowlands and The Danubian Plain.
